Projection mapping focuses on three main areas: hardware, media and software. You can source each of those separately, but it’s usually better to look for an all-in-one solution to avoid issues with compatibility.
Hardware encompasses all visible equipment essential for your project’s success, including your computer, cables, projector, power source, MIDI controller, and peripherals.
Software connects the equipment to the user interface, providing control over the output. This includes tools for 3D modelling and video mixers, which allow you to add aesthetic elements like videos or images.
As accessories we can call devices that help to house and protect the projector, especially when it is situated outdoors – for example 360 wall mount projector, tripod adapter, air filter or a plastic shield.
More specific equipment may be sometimes needed depending on the location, surface, scale and complexity of your project. The most important thing for an optimal result is that all pieces of equipment are compatible and that their communication is seamless.
Both hardware and software play a significant role in what the viewer sees and in what quality. When choosing the best projector for projection mapping, as well as the correct software, here is what you should look out for.
The quality of the visuals is significantly influenced by the chosen projector. The projection throw ratio (image width/distance between the projector and surface), zoom, contrast, quality of colours and brightness measured in lumens should be assessed.
Image resolution (the amount of pixels) is very important as well. In the world of projection mapping, a pair of numbers, such as 1920 x 1200 , refers to a common resolution pair. These numbers indicate the number of pixels that span the width and length of a particular display. The higher the resolution, the sharper the image.
Hardware and software work together to perfectly adapt the projected content to the shape of the surface. The projector scans the surface and the software converts it into a two-dimensional mesh, which it combines with the content. On-site accessories used to fix the projectors in the optimal position play an important role in the calibration process.
Projection mapping, used for any purpose, is a creative art. That’s why a good projection mapping software allows you to create and upload your own inventive content and elements in addition to the other, ready to use content.
While there is a software with limited capabilities, there are also those that are fully adaptable to all customer requirements and venue types. The same can be said to a limited extent about projectors. The “happy medium” projectors have versatile applications.
The longevity of the equipment and the quality of the material used make your investment in projection mapping worthwhile. The lifespan of a laser projector is 20 000 hours. Other choices may lie between Digital Light Processing (DLP) and Liquid Crystal Display technology (LCD).
All the components of LM3X’s projection mapping system, work together, it’s an all-in-one solution. Our software is seamlessly built inside the projector for your wireless experience. You can also use LM3X projectors with third-party software using the HDMI or HDBaseT signal inputs.
The projector itself is only one component of a projection mapping project. Nevertheless, the resulting effect hinges on it almost completely. The size and scope of a particular projection mapping installation should therefore determine the choice of hardware. And one of the first considerations is the amount of lighting required to create an impressive visual presentation.
In general, an indoor projection mapping is much less demanding on all projector parameters than outdoor one. An artistically lit entryway in a light-controlled indoor space requires less projected light output than an outdoor installation covering a large commercial building or landmark.
A decent consumer grade indoor projector may provide 2000-4000 lumens of lens light output. The commercial projectors in many outdoor projection mapping projects can deliver between 15000 and more than 60000 lumens. But even a Lazr4g video mapping projector with its 6000 lm and 1.2 – 1.9 throwing ratio is perfectly suitable and sufficient for outdoor performance.
Small business projects can get by (depending on the environment) with less powerful projectors, but in the case of advertising that has to impress customers for a longer period of time, you also need to think about equipment lifespan.
If a PM project requires additional light for an effective presentation or a larger area needs to be illuminated, multiple projectors can be stacked or linked into arrays to provide the required brightness or coverage. The choice of lens configurations or the use of first surface mirrors will also affect the amount of light a particular projector can deliver and must be considered when creating a PM presentation.
