How does video mapping work?

Video mapping is an exciting tool to convey your artistic or marketing message to a broad audience. If used the right way, it can mesmerize your audience, create a unique atmosphere and give a stunning show that will lend new life to any place, building, or specific event.

A successful video mapping project requires a creative mind, an interesting surface for projection and, of course, a great technology that can make magic possible. Video mapping transforms interior or exterior surfaces of chosen objects, buildings or architectural sights into a surface for video projection.

First you need to use a virtual program that spatially maps 2D or 3D objects or buildings. The program copies the surface you plan to project on. When you finish your visualization on your computer, the software then interacts with the projector. This way you can fit nearly anything you wish to display onto the chosen surface.

How to choose the right projection mapping projector?

Before buying any kind of projector, you should first consider your desired purpose, as well as the place where the projector will be used (small indoor spaces or large outdoor areas). The chosen model should meet those requirements and conditions first. When it comes to technical features, you should focus on the following specs:

Lightning conditions: For video mapping, you need a projector that can easily project outdoors or at well-lit events. Go for projectors with 4,000+ lumens.
Resolution: 3D laser mapping projectors should have high resolution (Full HD and above).
Image size and projection ratio: an augmented reality projector can create perfectly flawless displays if you follow this basic rule: Projection Ratio = projection distance / image width. You should therefore always think carefully about the projector location and possible fixture. A projector tripod might be a good idea for a small surface display. Big surfaces often require versatile fixtures and multi-projectors solutions.
Zoom and projection ratio range: integrated zoom is a practical feature that allows you to adjust projected image size without moving the projector.

Which software is used for mapping?

This software assists you with spatially mapping 2D surfaces or 3D objects. The access is very convenient thanks to the embedded internet mobile communication. This means you can easily access it from an unlimited distance.

What is the difference between projection and projection mapping?

Traditional projection of images or videos is possible on flat surfaces only (e.g., digital screens). Projection mapping, on the other hand, is meant to be used in a changing, uneven environment. The surfaces do not need to be flat.

Mapping projection is happening live and can display visual performances on 3D objects, buildings etc. It can also involve a group of projectors. The technology used for projection mapping provides a more immersive display and therefore better viewer experience.

What are the requirements for a projector for projection mapping?

If you are considering buying an outdoor mapping projector, you should definitely choose a model with 4000+ lumens.

If you want to project on a small (single-story) house, 3000+ lumens projector is a sufficient device. Nevertheless, projecting on larger surfaces requires advanced projectors with 5000+ lumens.

Professional outdoor projectors also have to be sturdy and waterproof. The best models can withstand severe weather conditions, including heavy rains, frosts and heat.
